LOS
ANGELES -- Porsche showed off the third generation, 2014
models, of the Cayman and Cayman S. The debuts took place during
the automaker's press conference on the first media day of the auto
show on Nov. 27. Both models were built from the grown up. They
are lower to the ground, lighter in weight, faster in speed and
more fuel efficient. The Cayman is equipped with a 2.7-liter engine
producing 275 horsepower. Meanwhile, the Cayman S comes with a 3.4-liter
engine creating 325 hp. Both models use 15 percent less fuel for
every 100 km (62 miles) than the previous version.
The 2014
Cayman can go from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. It has a top
speed of 266 km/hr (165 mph). The Cayman S can go from zero to 100
km/h in just five seconds. That model has a top speed of 283 km/h
or 176 mph.
"The
new Cayman is more distinctive than ever," said Matthias Müller,
President and CEO of Porsche AG. "The exterior has been significantly
restyled especially expressive of the dynamic in the doors and the
new rear spoiler is optima integrated in the body. Also, the interior
architecture is all new making the Cayman one of the most spacious
sports coupes in the market."
Both models
come with either 18- or 19-inch diamater wheels with larger rolling
circumference. The wheelbase -- distance between the centers of
the front and rear wheels -- is 60 mm (2.4 in) longer than the previous
model. The Cayman weighs 47 kg (104 lbs.) less than the previous
model due to its mixed aluminum-steel construction. About 44 percent
of the vehicle's total weight comes from just aluminum alone.
New features
on the Cayman include Adaptive Cruise Control, which controls the
distance to the car ahead in traffic and vehicle speed. In addition,
the Burmester sound system is new. A new, optional keyless entry
and drive system can be factory-installed. The Cayman also shares
the coasting function with the Boxster and the 911 Carrera that
allows the engine to run in neutral when going down a hill or mountain.
"Both
provide much more horsepower than before," Müller added.
"The new Cayman is much more frugal at the gas pump. Our customers
will enjoy a 50 percent decrease in fuel consumption. Year to date,
sales have increased by 50 percent compared to 2011. We have sold
more than 160,000 cars and nearly matched total sales from last
year. Here in America, the same holds true. Year over year sales
in America are up 13 percent."
Another
new addition to the Cayman is the "sport" button. It allows
the driver to choose between sport-oriented tuning and comfortable
turning for higher fuel efficiency. In the Sport mode, the engine
responds even quicker.
You've heard
of keyless entry. But the Cayman comes with the new Porsche Entry
and Drive system. That allows the driver to enter an access code
to enter the vehicle and start the engine, too. Owners of the new
Cayman, listen up: Don't give out your access code or your car might
be stolen! It sounds like a good feature, but it could be abused
if that access code gets in the wrong hands.
The 2014
Cayman and Cayman S will be available in U.S. dealerships beginning
in April. The Cayman will be priced at $52,600 while the Cayman
S will cost $63,800. Those figures do not include a $950 destination
charge.
Müller
also announced the opening of Porsche's new U.S. headquarters in
Atlanta. He cut the ribbon to One Porsche Drive just 22 hours before
speaking at the press conference in L.A.
"We
are also making a major investment right here in southern California,"
the president and CEO explained. "Next year, we will break
ground on the Porsche Experience Center in Carson. Like our other
centers in Germany, England and China, this facility will feature
multiple driver skills and training. This means, in the near future,
our exciting sports cars can be experienced in the right setting
by our Los Angeles customers."
