Standing
Start to Add Intrigue to 40th Toyota Grand Prix
of Long Beach
The
40th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, set to take
place April 11-13, will feature a standing start
for the IndyCar Series race, the first time a standing
start will take place for the featured race in Long
Beach since the final Champ Car World Series race
ran here in 2008 and just the second time since
the Formula One era ended in 1983. “One of
the unique parts of IndyCar racing is its different
formulas – racing on short ovals, superspeedways,
street and road courses – and standing starts
is another one of those components that in the right
place at the right time is good to showcase,”
said Derrick Walker, INDYCAR President of Competition
and Operations. |

LONG
BEACH 100: Chaves earns victory in caution-free
race
What's
that about turnabout? Gabby Chaves overtook pole
sitter Zach Veach entering the left-hand Turn
1 of the 11-turn, 1.968-mile street circuit and
went on to win the caution-free Long Beach 100
by .6364 of a second over the Andretti Autosport
driver. Two weeks earlier, Veach passed pole sitter
Chaves in the right-hand Turn 1 of the 14-turn,
1.8-mile St. Petersburg street course and earned
his first Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires
victory. "I was like, 'Take that, Zach,'
'' Chaves said.

Starts,
stops on streets: Conway a surprise winner at
Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach
The door was open for Andretti
Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe,
who were running 1-2 (the way they started the
80-lap race), to battle for the victory in the
40th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Until Lap
56. That's when the door swung wide open for others
-- the result of a multi-car pile-up triggered
by the front-runner -- to challenge over the final
24 laps on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street course.
The chief beneficiaries were Scott Dixon, Justin
Wilson, Will Power and Mike Conway – all
of whom squeezed through the Turn 4 incident –
and the intrigue continued on the single-file
restart.
