LOS
ANGELES -- The
Maybach name has been resurrected! In 1960, Diamler-Benz purchased
the Maybach brand. By 2003, Diamler AG was working to make it
profitable once again. However, in 2010 sales dropped below 100
units and it folded.
At
the 2014 L.A. Auto Show, the Maybach name returned as part of
the Mercedes family. It will come with a 6.0-liter, V12 biturbo
engine, 20-inch wheels and Nappa leather inside. The S600 will
produce 523 horsepower and 612 lb.-ft. of torque.
"Mercedes-Maybach
means an unparalled combination of individualization, hand-craftsmanship
and industry-leading intelligence," said Stephen Cannon,
president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. "It's only fitting
that we've chosen the S-Class to carry this banner. After all,
we consider the S-Class to be the best car in the world. Now,
an S-Class so exclusive, we have to name it Maybach."
Other
features on the S600 include a panoramic sliding sunroof, roller
sunblinds for the triangular windows, roller sunblinds in the
rear doors, business console, champagne flutes and a Burmester
3D surround system. Additionally, the S600 comes with an air-balance
package, which includes fragrancing, ionization and even more
efficient filtration compared with the basic vehicle. A premium
room fragrance was designed exclusively for this model.
"Our
Mercedes-Maybach is the highest expression of modern luxury,"
said Gordon Wagener, vice president of design at Diamler AG. "It
is the world's most quietest production vehicle. One reason for
this perfection of silence is its new, super smooth V12 biturbo
engine. It has 523 horsepower under the hood. Certainly, our Mercedes-Maybach
sets benchmarks in many respects. Space is also often a luxury.
Therefore, our Mercedes-Maybach has about eight inches of extra
length, my team and I used to design a highly appealing luxury
lounge inside."
Look for the Mercedes-Maybach S600 to hit the market in April
2015 at a cost of around $200,000. The German automaker has promised
that additional Maybach models will soon follow.
