LOS
ANGELES -- The cat's out of the bag. Chevrolet's big announcement
for the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show was the introduction of the 2015
Colorado midsize pickup truck. It was teased as a linchpin for the
Detroit-based automaker. The new Colorado will come with a choice
of three engine types: a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder; a 3.6-liter,
V6 motor; and a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel (in its second
year).
"From
wheels to headliners, it's an all new truck," said Otie McKinley,
Chevrolet's Assistant Communication Manager. "New lines, new
sheet metal, new powertrain, new suspension, new interior, new worlds.
We are excited to share it with the world here in L.A. It's certainly
important to us from a Chevrolet family perspective. Just looking
at our truck portfolio, it allows us to have a three-truck program.
From the midsize Colorado to the light duty Silverado up to the
heavy duty 2500 and 3500 Silverado. We will be the only manufacturer
that offers the full breath of pickup trucks for consumers."
Chevrolet
decided to bring back the Colorado pickup after it was last produced
in August 2012.
"After
a couple of years and some rebirth of the company, we've decided
that this is a market that is underutilized and undeserved,"
he added. "So we wanted to bring a product to the customers
in this mid-truck market."
New
features include a standard CornerStep rear bumper, EZ lift-and-lower
tailgate, 13 standard tie-down locations, standard bed rail and
tailgate protectors and factory-installed spray-in bed liner.
"We
wanted to make sure that the Colorado, while still embracing the
heritage of Chevrolet in its grille, we wanted to make it look a
little more sporty," Chevrolet's Assistant Communication Manager
explained. "It sits a little lower, a good strong stance. Moving
towards the back of the truck, we offer two cab configurations:
We have an extended cab and a crew cab. We believe it to be the
most accessorizable bed in the industry. We have four static load
hooks. We have stanchions that plug into the state pockets that
raise these load bars up to the cabin height."
Production
of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado will begin in the third quarter of
2014. They will be available in U.S. showrooms at the end of that
year.
"This
vehicle was engineered to be the segment leader in fuel economy
across the boards," McKinley said. "We had lines drawn
in the sand saying, 'This is the vehicle we want to make, these
are the horsepower numbers, the towing, payload and fuel economy
numbers.'"
