LOS
ANGELES -- The bowtie
automaker revealed two new concept vehicles to the media during
its press conference at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday,
Nov. 19.
First
was the Colorado ZR2 concept pickup, which is described as a vision
of what the next generation of the midsize truck could look like.
It features the new 2.8-liter, Duramax diesel engine that will
be coming the Colorado lineup next year. It will produce 180 horsepower
and 365 ft.-lb. of torque.
"Isn't
it beautiful? Our team just did a tremendous job," said Mark
Reuss, GM's executive vice president of global product development.
"It takes Colorado to a whole new place. The ZR2 really builds
on the Colorado's tough truck frame and sporty character with
flare and function. There's a four-inch wider track, special 18-inch
wheels with performance tires, a new grille with an integrated
front winch. Everything that you need for off-roading including
tow hooks and a quick-release spare tire mounted in the bed."
Additional
features of the ZR2 include new front and rear fascias designed
to increase approach and departure angles when driving off road,
Mono-tube coil-over shock absorbers by King are designed for greater
suspension travel, custom wheel flares, a spray-in
bed liner, GearOn accessories and a 48-inch Hi-Lift jack.
Second
was the Chaparral 2X VGT concept car, which was developed exclusively
for fans of the PlayStation® 3 racing game, Gran Turismo®
6. Gamers can race this car by downloading an online update for
Gran Turismo 6.
"It's
an entirely new kind of race car built around progressive technology,"
said Clay Dean, GM's executive director of advanced design. "Perhaps
even more so because it was designed for a virtual race track.
This is Chevrolet's entry into the Vision Gran Turismo festival.
A festival that celebrates 15 years of the widely popular Grand
Turismo driving simulation game. It ends all preconceptions of
race car propulsion--shape and even driver position. It's the
kind of project that designers dream of."
The
Chaparral 2X VGT is powered by the same technology that you might
find on an airplane. With a 671-kW laser, powered by a pack of
lithium-ion batteries, and an air-powered generator to provide
900 horsepower worth of thrust, the Chaparral 2X VGT will be capable
of a 240-mph top speed in the video game with 0-60 acceleration
capability of 1.5 seconds.
Look
for Chevrolet to take the wraps off the newly-redesigned 2016
Chevrolet Volt at the North American International Auto Show in
Detroit next month.
