LOS
ANGELES -- Subaru debuted the fourth generation or 2014
model of its Forester crossover SUV. The vehicle made its North
American debut during the automaker's press conference on the first
media day of the auto show on Nov. 28. The new Forester comes with
a choice of two engines: a 2.0-liter boxer engine producing 250
horsepower or a 2.5-liter boxer engine producing 170 horsepower.
It reaches an estimated fuel economy of 32 mpg on the highway. New
features include hill descent control, driver assist technology
and an enhanced active all wheel drive system.
"Subaru's
global vehicle sales reached 348,000 units, this is an all-time
record for first half results," said Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president
and CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. "At the same time, we
achieved an operating income of $540 million, which is more than
double the previous year. The main reason we had such strong results
was strong sales in the U.S. and in Japan. Now, the all-new Forester.
This is of course, a key product to achieve our business target.
We hope the all-new Forester will be well received here in America,
the main market for this model."
The 2014
Forester is 1.4 inches longer and 0.6 inches wider than the previous
model. There is 75 cubic feet of space in the rear cargo area.
"However
you choose to slice it, the current Forester has been a runaway
success," said Thomas Doll, executive vice president and chief
operating officer of Subaru of America. "In fact, the current
Forester increased sales over its lifetime by over 60 percent from
the previous generation. Forester has brought over 900,000 customers
to Subaru. In fact, over 60 percent of our consumers were new to
the brand. The Forester is Subaru's most award-winning model and
the industry's most decorated small SUV."
The new
model comes with an estimated EPA rating of 24 mpg in the city and
32 mpg on the highway. New safety additions include anti-whiplash
front seats, a driver's knee airbag, brake override and an impact-sensing
fuel system cutoff.
"For
the all-new 2014 Forester, our project team delivered a vehicle
with enhanced styling, more road presence, better fuel economy,
better driveability around town and on the highway, improved day-to-day
usability." Doll added. "We've improved the all-wheel
drive capability and you get more performance and more differentiation
with the new turbo model. Forester turbo is that sweet spot where
all-wheel drive capability meets WRX know how. X-Mode takes all-wheel
drive to a new level delivering extra control in extra slippery
situations."
Pricing
for the 2014 Forester will be announced in January. The automaker
teased us with the announcement of a new hybrid vehicle, which will
likely be revealed at the North American International Auto Show
in Detroit.
