LOS
ANGELES -- For the first time in several
years, Lincoln showed off a concept vehicle at the 2014 Los Angeles
Auto Show. The Lincoln MKX Concept made its North American debut
in L.A. after making its world debut in Beijing.
"This
is a new midsize luxury SUV concept," said David Woodhouse,
design director for Lincoln. "We're building on the momentum
of recent products from Lincoln. We had the MKC launch just in
this last year. This is the next segment up from MKC. It's a design
study for the form, the expression, the signature cues that we're
developing for Lincoln for the future. It doesn't have door handles.
It has little switches. There's a little switch that you press
and then it has electronic latching that releases off the seal
and pushes out towards you."
It
is the newest embodiment of the elegantly updated Lincoln design
language. The exterior's sculptural and material updates create
an emotive silhouette, while the split wing grille and full-length
tail lamp proudly convey the evolved look of the Lincoln Family.
"The
signature bow-wave grille that we have is the latest development
of that," the design director added. "The sort of floating
LED lighting elements are embedded within the grille. The form
of the car is very emotionalized. If you can imagine the current
production MKX, you can see that what we are proposing is much
more of an emotionalized design language for the future. It's
got a great stance of volume and it sits beautifully. This was
designed in the Lincoln studio in Dearborn, Mich. We have a dedicated
studio with a big team and this show car came from there."
The
engine choices have not yet been announced. However, it could
come equipped with a 3.7-liter, V6 creating 21 mpg or a 2.7-liter,
EcoBoost V6 that will be in the new Ford F-150, according to Edmunds.com.
Woodhouse would not discuss the powertrain at this time.
It was recently announced that the MKX Concept shown here will
become the 2016 model year of the crossover SUV.
